The Piper PA-32, initially known as the Cherokee Six, was first introduced in 1960, and went into production in 1963.
With a six cylinder single engine, and the capability to seat six, the early PA-32s were powered by a 260 horsepower engine and are larger than the original PA-28 Cherokee.
In 1968 a new variant, the Lance arrived. It was powered by a 300 horsepower Lycoming engine. In 1978 the Lance II was introduced. One of it's selling points was a retractable undercarriage.
The Lance II has since been replaced by the current New Piper models Saratoga II HP and the turbocharged Saratoga II TC. With a wing span of 36 feet and a length of over 28 feet, both Saratoga models hold over 100 gallons of fuel. The initial Saratoga variant has been on the market since 1980.
New Piper promotes both the Saratoga II HP and the Saratoga II TC as sports utility vehicles. One of the PA-32s competitors is the Cessna 206 Stationair .
The Cessna 206 Stationair is also powered by a 300 horsepower engine and seats six. It also touts itself as a sports utility vehicle.
The Saratoga II HP was introduced to the market in 1993, and the Saratoga II TC in 1997.
The PA-32 was also built under license in Brazil as the Embraer EMB-720 Minuano, and the PA-32R as the EMB-721 Sertanejo. Chincul in Argentina built the PA-32 as the PA-A-32 , the PA-32R as the PA-A-32R , and the PA-32RT as the PA-A-32RT .
