BIPOLAR TRANSISTOR

Commonly used for amplification, the bipolar transistor can amplify analog or digital signals. Also known as a bipolar junction transistor, the bipolar transistor comes in two different configurations; PNP and NPN.
There are three elements to a bipolar transistor. The center of the bipolar transistor is called the base of the transistor. One terminal is called the emitter, and the third terminal is the collector.
Bipolar transistors can switch signals at high speeds, but are not adapt at handling weak-signal amplification.

FIELD EFFECT TRANSISTOR

A FET is a type of transistor designed for weak-signal amplification. The device can amplify analog or digital signals. Similar in appearance to a bipolar transistor, a FET is a three-lead device. The terminals in a FET are called gate, drain, and source. In the FET the current flows along a path called the channel. The output current (source) is controlled by the voltage applied to the gate. At the other end is the drain. A FET amplifies signals by changes in the gate voltage. There are several different type of field effect transistors.

MOSFET

The most common transistor today is the Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor or MOSFET. MOSFETs are often used in power amplifiers. The foundation of a MOSFET circuit is similar to a basic FET. In both cased the width of the channel carrying the current varies But now in a MOSFET the gate is insulated from the channel by a thin layer of metal oxide.

JFET

The Junction Field Effect Transistor, or JFET transistor, comes in two different designs, the p-channel or n-channel. In each case a channel of one type of semiconductor material is located inside the other material.
