A diode is a two-terminal semiconductor that allows current to flow in one direction only. Diodes are used as a one-way conductor to convert alternating current to direct current. Thyristors are used for power control. Optoelectronic devices are electronic components designed to product light and are used for indicators and displays.
DIAC
A type of thyristor, DIACs often work together with Triacs. Like a Triac, once the Diac has been triggered, the gate loses all control until the current flow drops below the specified current.
LIGHT EMITTING DIODE
Light Emitting diodes (LEDs) are produced in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. Some of the newer varieties of light emitting diodes include white light emitting diode and blue light emitting diodes. The white light emitting diodes are used for backlighting in cell phones. Seven-segment LEDs are used for displaying number and alphanumeric symbols. The front of a seven-segment LED is arranged in a block “8” pattern.
RECTIFIER DIODE
A rectifier, also known as a rectifier diode, works on the principle that current passes through the device freely in one direction, but only slightly, or not at all in the opposite direction. The rectifier circuit is designed so that it can safely dissipate the heat caused by current flow.
The simplest rectifier circuit is the half wave rectifier. It only allows one half to pass through to the load.
One early type of rectifier is the electron tube.
SCHOTTKY DIODE
The Schottky diode is a diode with a low forward voltage drop and a very fast switching action. Also known as a four-layer diode, because of the construction of the diode, the Schottky diode differs from other diodes in that it uses a metal-semiconductor junction as a Schottky barrier. The Schottky barrier allows for both the very fast switching times and low forward voltage drop.
RTHYRISTORS and SILICON CONTROLLED RECTIFIER (SCR)
Thyristors are a semiconductor device used for power control. Similar to a diode, thyristors have an extra terminal to turn it on. Once turned on, the component serves as an electronic switch.
The thyristor switch is a four-layer semiconductor device with each layer consisting of alternating N or P type material. A silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) is considered synonymous with thyristor, SCR is a trade name. Some engineers will refer to the component as a thyristor scr.
A type of electron tube, the thyratron, was the for-runner of the thyristor.
TRIAC
A type of thyristor, the triac consists of two thyristors with their gates joined together. The triac valve can conduct current in either direction once triggered or turned on. The three leads in a triac are designated as gate, M1 and M2. Often triggered by Diacs, Triacs are commonly used in light dimmers.
ZENER DIODE
Zener diodes are primarily used as voltage regulators. The zener diode circuit is designed to automatically maintain a constant voltage level.
