Terminology
Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitor: A type of capacitor where an electrolytic process forms the dielectric.
Anode: The positive electrode of a capacitor.
Bipolar Capacitor: Also known as a non-polarized capacitor, the component can be connected either way in a circuit.
Capacitance: The electron storing ability of a capacitor
Capacitor: An electronic component used for storing charge and energy temporarily. A capacitor consists of two conductive plates which store opposite charges and is separated by a dielectric. The values of a capacitor, or how much electricity can be stored in a capacitor, is expressed in terms of Farads.
Cathode: The negative electrode of a capacitor.
Ceramic Capacitor: Any type of capacitor where the dielectric, or insulator, is made of ceramic. Often offered as multiplayer
ceramics capacitors, common configurations include NPO, X7R, Z5U and Y5V dielectric. These capacitors can be broken down further accordingly:

Chip Capacitor: A type of capacitor without leads. Synonymous with surface mount capacitor.
Condenser: Also known as a capacitor.
Dielectric: An insulating material used in capacitors.
Electrolyte: A current-conducting medium between two electrodes in a capacitor.
Electrolytic Capacitor: A capacitor whose anode has a metal oxide film on it.
Glass Capacitor: A type of capacitor that uses glass as the dielectric.
Farad: How the capacitance of a capacitor is measured. Microfarad and
Pico farads are common measurements. A Pico farad is 0.000000000001 Farads. A microfarad is 0.000001 Farads,
Film Capacitor: A type of capacitor made of various plastics such as polystyrene, polyester or polypropylene.
Inductance: The property of a electronic component that opposes change in Alternating Current (AC). Measured in
mill henries (mH), micro henries (uH) or Nan henries (nH).
Leads: Common lead types for capacitor and resistors include no leads, axial leads, radial leads, and screw terminals.
Mica Capacitor: A type of capacitor that uses mica for the dielectric.
Military Capacitor: Capacitors can be approved into various Qualified Products List (QPL) and are then given a numerical listing. For the various categories, Click Here .
Polarized Capacitor: A capacitor in which the dielectric is formed on only one electrode. Therefore the component can only be connected one way in the circuit.
Rated Capacitance: The value which is indicated upon the capacitor. The actual capacitance may vary from this value within the tolerance limits for that capacitor.
Surface Mount Capacitor : A type of capacitor without leads.
Surge Voltage: The maximum safe voltage to which a capacitor should be subjected under any circumstance for a short period of time.
Tantalum Capacitor: A low-voltage type of capacitor that uses tantalum for the electrodes. These capacitors come in several different configurations.

Variable Capacitor: Also known as a trimmer capacitor.
Voltage: In a capacitor, the electromotive force trying to move electrons from negative to positive.
Watts : A measure of power determined by multiplying Voltage by the Current.
